I’ve followed Glamorgan since about 2002, a time when Matthew Maynard was still in thrilling form with the bat, recording century after century. Or so it seemed. But I’ve stuck close, and studying at university in Swansea and later Cardiff even allowed me to get along to the odd game.
The first game I attended was at St. Helen’s, a Frizzell County Championship game between Glamorgan and Sussex. It was the third day when I went along in blazing sunshine. The first day had been a washout, and Sussex were building a healthy total – Messrs Goodwin and Montgomery both reached triple figures. In their reply, Glamorgan flailed and faltered. It was notable for being Sourav Ganguly’s debut for the county – he returned to the hutch with a six ball duck to his name. Soon enough, the hosts were following on. Back again for the fourth day, Ganguly hit form with a defiant half-century that guided the Dragons to a draw. Marvellous! And who can forget the group of teachers in fancy-dress serenading Mustaq Ahmed at third man?
I started this blog as a means to keep tabs on Glammy’s progress throughout 2008. Naturally, I would like to get tickets to the 1st Ashes Test at Sophia Gardens (SWALEC Stadium? Nah…) next summer but in doing so proving I’m not some sort of Johnny-come-lately interested in the bigger prize. I don’t live in South Wales any more, so I’m doing all my supporting from a distance. But I’ll be back as soon as I can…
